Fun with Science: Rocks and Geology
During our November event, we had a tasty way to learn about rocks and geology! Besides examining a minerals kit, we used food to model the different types of rock formation: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. We also made a topographic map of our own mountain made from play-dough!

After laying down a slice of bread, we sprinkled various snacks on top to model sedimentary rock. Then we took another layer of bread and used our hands to apply pressure and heat to shape metamorphic rock. Last, but not least, we dipped pretzel sticks into melted chocolate to make igneous rock! Yummy :P
Next we all made our own mountain from play-dough. Then we traced around the base with a pencil. Using dental floss, we left about an inch of space from the bottom and cut across the mountain. We removed the sliced base and put the remaining mountain on top of the paper. Then we traced around the new base of the mountain. We continued this process until we got to the top of the mountain! Removing the play-dough revealed the topographic map of our mountain!

Join us on December 14, 2019 at 11AM at our local Paine branch library in Eastwood, Syracuse to learn about circuits! We'll be making our own light up holiday cards, and it will definitely be awesome! Hope to see you there!
